Elite Dangerous Thargoid Spire Sites: What They Are and How to Survive Them

Thargoid Spire Sites are among the most dangerous locations in Elite Dangerous. This guide covers what they are, how to locate them, what to expect inside, and how to survive your visit.

Thargoid Spire Sites are among the most dangerous and most rewarding locations in Elite Dangerous. These enormous alien structures appeared in the Colonia region and systems surrounding the human bubble following the escalation of the Thargoid conflict, and they represent one of the clearest signs that the Thargoids are not simply attacking humanity — they are building something. Understanding what Spire Sites are, how to approach them safely, and how to survive long enough to gather what they contain is essential knowledge for any Commander operating in contested space.

What Are Thargoid Spire Sites?

Thargoid Spire Sites are massive ground-based alien structures found on planetary surfaces in systems under heavy Thargoid influence. Unlike the older Thargoid Surface Sites — the barnacle clusters and ancient ruins found deeper in explored space — Spire Sites represent active Thargoid construction. They are large, visually striking, and surrounded by hostile Thargoid forces that will engage any human ship that comes within range.

The Spires themselves appear as towering biological-mechanical structures that rise from the surface, pulsing with bioluminescence. They are surrounded by Thargoid ground forces and often covered by active Thargoid vessels in the air above. Approaching a Spire Site without preparation and understanding the threat level is a fast route to losing your ship and your rebuy screen.

Spire Sites contain valuable materials not readily available elsewhere in the galaxy — specifically Thargoid-derived components and biological samples that are essential for unlocking and upgrading AX weaponry, Guardian technology enhancements, and certain high-tier engineering materials. If you are serious about building an AX combat ship or pursuing the deeper layers of the Thargoid conflict storyline, Spire Sites are places you will need to visit.

Threat Level and What to Expect

Spire Sites are not beginner content. Before attempting any visit, you should be flying a ship that is at minimum partially engineered for AX combat or survivability in Thargoid-controlled space. At minimum, you need caustic resistance on your hull, a functional decontamination limpet supply, and shields that can absorb Thargoid attacks long enough for you to manoeuvre out of danger. Going in with a stock ship is not recommended under any circumstances.

The primary threats at a Spire Site are Thargoid Scouts and, depending on the system’s alert level, Interceptors. Scouts are fast and aggressive — they will target you the moment you enter the engagement zone around the Spire. Interceptors are significantly more dangerous and will typically require a properly outfitted AX combat ship to defeat. If an Interceptor is present, your first decision is whether your ship is configured to engage it or whether you need to focus on avoiding it while gathering what you came for.

Ground forces around the Spire include Thargoid ground troops and stationary emplacements. If you are landing near or at the base of the Spire to gather materials, these forces will engage your SRV. The SRV is not well-suited to sustained combat against multiple Thargoid ground forces, so the approach strategy is typically to pick your landing zone carefully, avoid the largest concentrations of enemies, and extract efficiently rather than engaging everything in sight.

How to Approach a Spire Site Safely

Approach matters enormously at Spire Sites. Your ship’s approach vector, landing zone choice, and awareness of the air threat situation all determine how the encounter unfolds. The first principle is always to survey before committing. Drop into the system, scan the Spire Site location from a safe distance, and assess what hostile forces are in the immediate area before entering the engagement zone.

If there are Interceptors in the air, you have three options. The first is to engage them — this requires a fully outfitted AX combat build and a reasonable level of skill in the Interceptor combat mechanics. The second is to use a ship with good enough speed and maneuverability to avoid Interceptor fire while landing quickly, gathering what you need, and departing. The third is to wait for the system’s alert level to reduce before visiting.

When landing, aim for a spot at the edge of the Spire Site rather than the centre. The ground forces are typically densest at the base of the Spire structure itself, while the outer areas often have pockets where you can land, deploy your SRV, and gather materials without immediately triggering every enemy in the area. Take your time identifying a clean approach before committing your ship to a landing pad.

What Materials Can You Gather at Spire Sites?

Spire Sites contain several categories of valuable material. Thargoid biological samples — gathered using the SRV’s collection systems — are available from the site itself and from neutralised ground forces. These samples are used in certain engineering recipes and in the crafting of advanced anti-Thargoid ammunition types. They are not available at any other location in the game at this density, making Spire Sites the most efficient source for this category of material.

Thargoid structural components — physical pieces of the Spire structure that can be collected — represent another category of rare material available at these sites. These have applications in specific engineering workflows and are sought by players pursuing the highest tiers of AX engineering. The collection process requires your SRV to approach specific points on the Spire structure and interact with designated collection nodes, all while managing the threat environment around you.

Crash site salvage and wreckage from previous human-Thargoid engagements in the area also occasionally yields useful materials. If you see wreckage near a Spire Site, scan it before moving on — it may contain high-grade manufactured materials or even encoded data that would otherwise require significant time to farm elsewhere.

Ships and Loadouts for Spire Site Runs

The ideal ship for Spire Site operations is one that balances survivability in Thargoid space with the agility and speed needed to avoid or escape hostile contact if things go wrong. Pure AX combat builds work well if your objective is to engage Interceptors while gathering. If your objective is purely material gathering with minimal combat, a fast ship with caustic sink launchers, good shields, and a cargo rack is more appropriate.

Essential equipment regardless of build: an AX weapon (at minimum one fixed or turreted AX multicannon or AX missile rack), decontamination limpet controller and limpets (caustic damage from Interceptors will destroy your ship without decontamination), caustic sink launchers, and hull reinforcement packages with thermal resistance. A shutdown field neutraliser is recommended if Interceptors are likely — they will use their EMP ability to shut down your ship’s systems, and without a neutraliser you will be a sitting target during the shutdown period.

For the SRV component of the run, the Scarab SRV is the standard choice. Its weapons are marginally effective against Thargoid ground forces, but your primary survival tool in the SRV is speed and terrain awareness rather than direct combat. Know where your ship is at all times, keep your return path clear, and do not stay in the SRV longer than necessary if hostile ground forces are converging on your position.

Why Spire Sites Matter for the Thargoid War

Thargoid Spire Sites are not just content — they are part of an evolving narrative in Elite Dangerous. The Thargoids are building these structures for reasons that have not been fully revealed, and the player community has been actively investigating what they mean and what they are intended to produce. Galaxy-wide Community Goals and Thargoid War effort progress are partially shaped by how many systems players successfully defend from Thargoid control, and Spire Sites are present specifically in systems where the Thargoid presence is strong.

Engaging with Spire Sites as part of AX combat operations, system defence, or material gathering all contribute to the broader war effort. For Commanders who want to be part of the Thargoid War storyline at its most active and dangerous level, Spire Sites are the frontline.
