What Is Windrose?

Windrose is a pirate survival adventure set in the Age of Piracy, developed and published by Windrose Crew. It launched in Early Access on PC on 14 April 2026, after a Steam Next Fest demo that hundreds of thousands of players tried. You play a captain out for revenge against Blackbeard, and the story grows from there into a wider fight between empires, pirate clans and darker powers.

You can play solo or with a crew of friends in co-op. It mixes several genres: survival crafting, base building, souls-lite melee combat and naval battles, all in a procedurally generated world of islands and open sea. This hub brings together the Windrose guides and videos on Ricardo’s Gaming. If you’re brand new, start with the Windrose beginner guide, which covers the mistakes most new players make.

The World

The map is procedurally generated across three biomes, with dozens of handcrafted points of interest such as dungeons, temples and shipwrecks. That mix keeps the world fresh between playthroughs while still giving you set-piece locations worth sailing to. Exploration drives progression. The further you push into new biomes, the better the materials, gear and threats you’ll find.

Combat on Land

Combat on foot is inspired by souls-like games. You’ve got sabres, maces and other melee weapons, along with firearms like muskets. Parrying and dodging are central, so mashing the attack button gets you killed fast, especially against bosses. Learn enemy attack patterns, keep your stamina in check and pick your moment.

Ships and Naval Combat

Your ship is your home, your transport and your main weapon. Naval combat uses broadsides and boarding actions, and in co-op your crew can split the ship’s weapons between them. Ships range from a small ketch up to a brig and a frigate, so there’s a real sense of progression from a starter vessel to a proper warship.

Building and Settlements

On land you can build anything from basic shelters up to mansions and forts. You can also recruit NPCs to your settlements to speed up harvesting and production, which frees you up to sail and explore. A well-placed base near good resources saves you a lot of time later.

Progression and Other Systems

  • Skills and talents. You earn skill points and spend them on talents that shape your captain’s build. The pirate lord or lady character guide goes into how to plan a build.
  • Armour sets. Gear sets give you another layer of build choice on top of your talents.
  • Faction reputation. How you treat each faction changes how they treat you.
  • Trading, farming and fishing. Gentler ways to build up resources and money between fights.

Beginner Tips

  • Learn to parry early. It’s the single biggest skill in land combat, and bosses punish you hard if you can’t do it.
  • Don’t sail too far too soon. New biomes bring tougher enemies. Gear up before you push out.
  • Set up a base early. Somewhere safe to store loot and craft makes everything else easier.
  • Plan your talents. Spreading points thinly leaves you weak at everything. Pick a direction for your captain.
  • Bring friends for boarding. Co-op makes naval fights far easier, with one player on the guns while another leads the boarding party.

Solo or Co-op?

Windrose works both ways, but it changes how the game feels. Solo, you’re doing everything yourself: sailing, gathering, building and fighting. Hiring NPC crew helps, but progress is slower and boss fights are tighter. In co-op, jobs split naturally. One player keeps the base running, another gathers materials, and when a fight starts at sea one of you takes the helm while the others work the guns or lead the boarding party. If you’ve got a regular group, co-op is the easiest way into the harder content.

How Long Is Windrose?

The developers have said the main story should take somewhere between 50 and 70 hours. That’s before you count base building, side exploration and playing around with different builds. Because the world is procedurally generated, a second run with friends won’t play out the same as your first.

What Is Coming Next

The team has said it plans to add around 50 percent more content during Early Access, including new biomes, enemies, ships and gear, and possibly new gameplay systems. If the launch version feels like it ends too soon, that’s the plan for filling it out. Ship building and naval combat are the parts most likely to grow, given how central the sea is to everything else in the game.

Is Windrose Worth Playing in Early Access?

If you enjoy survival crafting games and like the idea of your own pirate ship, there’s a lot here already: a full story path, three biomes, boss fights and real naval combat. The usual Early Access warnings apply. Systems will change, balance will shift and some content isn’t in yet. If you want a finished, polished game, it might be worth waiting. If you’re happy to grow with a game and have friends to sail with, it’s a strong pick right now.

Early Access: What to Expect

Windrose is in Early Access, and the developers have said they plan to stay there for around one and a half to two and a half years. Expect regular updates, balance changes and new content, and expect some guides to change as systems get reworked.
