Elite Dangerous Halloween 2026: What Is Hiding in LFT 509?

LFT 509 is open for Halloween 2026. Where to find the Perpetual Toil logs, Silver-Six Observatory, the free paint jobs and skins, and what the story means.

Quick answer: The Elite Dangerous Halloween 2026 event takes place in LFT 509, a system that’s been permit locked for years. Every commander has now been given the permit. Scan five ship logs on the Perpetual Toil megaship and five more at Silver-Six Observatory on the planet surface, and you unlock free Halloween paint jobs, weapon skins and a suit skin along the way. The logs tell a creepy story about a mining crew that dug into something that was alive.

I flew out there, bumbled my way through it and recorded the lot in What Is Hiding in LFT 509? Elite Dangerous Halloween Event. This is the written guide, with the locations, the rewards and my take on the story.

Fair warning before we go any further. Spoiler alert, spoiler alert, spoiler alert. If you want to piece the mystery together yourself, grab your rewards first and come back to the story section later.

What Is the Elite Dangerous Halloween 2026 Event?

It’s a free, self-guided mystery in LFT 509. The event went live with the weekly server refresh, straight after the Anaconda Mk II community goals wrapped up. Those goals were only a couple of jumps away, so if you took part you’re practically on the doorstep.

The setup arrives as an in-game message. The Pilots’ Federation has been asked to investigate LFT 509, the permit has been issued, and you’re told to bring a ship with an SRV. That last bit matters, because half of this event happens on the ground.

There’s no community goal, no timer on screen and no combat zone. You turn up, scan things, read logs and collect free cosmetics. Frontier hasn’t put out a news post or Galnet article for it, and there’s no official end date yet. Community write-ups expect the rewards to go once Halloween is over, so I wouldn’t leave it too long.

Walkthrough: Perpetual Toil and Silver-Six Observatory

Step 1: The Perpetual Toil

You can’t miss it. The Perpetual Toil is a big old ship parked inside an asteroid, the classic sci-fi trick of turning a rock into a ready-made mining base. There are biosphere domes rotating around it, and with the right lighting it looks fantastic. Frontier did a proper job on this one.

You’re after five ship log uplinks, and you’ll need your data link scanner and to get nice and close for each one.

They’re spread across the asteroid and the ship itself. Check the main spire at the front, around the crater and the domes, along the main structure, and at the back in the engineering section just past the defence turret.

A few NPC ships fly around and will scan you, so don’t panic when the warnings pop up. There’s also a cargo bay, power capacitors and some transmitters, but you can’t hack anything, which is a bit of a shame. The logs aren’t voice acted either, unlike some of Frontier’s earlier mysteries. Night vision helps when you’re hunting round the darker corners. A nimble ship makes life easier. I took the Anaconda Mk II, and it did the job.

Step 2: Silver-Six Observatory

Once the logs are done, scan the planets in the system and look for Silver-Six Observatory, a surface settlement. Drop the landing gear, deploy your SRV and trundle round with your data link scanner. I used the Scarab. Scan the comms uplinks, settlement terminals and even the turrets, because some of them hand out messages and rewards. There are five logs to collect. Mine came in a random order, so keep going until the counter says five of five.

While you’re down there, the settlement is full of crystals, hybrid capacitors and other materials. You can log out and back in to reset them if you’re short of engineering mats. I even picked up some cracked industrial firmware from a turret.

The Free Rewards

Scanning the logs drops the rewards as you go. This is what I picked up on camera:

RewardType
Anaconda Noctule PoltergeistPaint job
Asp Explorer Noctule PoltergeistPaint job
Manticore Intimidator Shriek PurpleWeapon skin
Manticore Executioner Shriek PurpleWeapon skin
Trickster suit skinSuit skin

That isn’t the full list. Community reports put the total at nine freebies across both sites, and players on Steam have also mentioned a jack-o’-lantern helmet from the settlement logs.

The Story So Far (Spoilers)

The Perpetual Toil logs

The first four logs belong to Captain Olivia Mara, starting on 4 September 3254. Things begin nicely. There’s a new hydroponics dome, fresh fruit and veg for the crew, and a glass of prosecco in the mess hall. Then she sends Mining Crew B into a deep cavern where something is dripping down the walls.

It isn’t water. The eyewitness reports don’t agree. One miner describes an ooze like unrefined oil, another swears it was a swarm of insects, and somebody else says demons. Whatever it is, it appears to be alive.

It goes downhill fast. Crew B’s comms cut out mid-sentence. A six-person security team goes in after them and only three come back, all agreeing the miners were already dead. One insists the walls were breathing. The sample in the lab starts to hum, a low buzz that people feel more than hear, and everyone says they feel watched. By log four the crew are abandoning ship, with screaming from the sealed areas as the shuttles fire up.

Log five is just a string of dots and slashes. I thought it might be Morse code. Nobody in the community has cracked it yet, so it could be a clue for later or just noise.

The Silver-Six Observatory logs

The surface logs belong to Professor Wilfried Norris, an exobiologist with 31 years behind him who’s finally found a truly new life form. The Perpetual Toil survivors are kept in orbit while a quarantine wing is built.

Then it turns out a technician called Julian smuggled a sample down in a sealed flask. When asked why, he said he heard his mother’s voice in the life form’s hum. The specimen sits in containment and probes the walls, slowly learning. When Captain Mara’s voice comes over the speaker, it finds a weak seam, gets into the air ducts and kills every Perpetual Toil survivor, Mara included. It doesn’t touch the scientists. Then it just stops and rests.

Norris’s final log is a warning. The thing isn’t a specimen. It’s curious, it went where it wanted, and it was only reacting to its home being mined. His advice is simple: keep the system in permit lockdown and never let it near humanity on a wider scale. So naturally, we’ve all just been handed the permit.

Is this the start of something bigger?

That’s the part I keep coming back to. Some past Halloween events have been more elaborate than this, and this one feels a bit like part one. Is the entity tied to this one asteroid, or are there more of them out there? If it’s the mining that set it off, does every asteroid miner in the bubble now have a question mark over them? A new threat to take the Anaconda Mk II up against would be something, wouldn’t it?

Handy tips

  • Bring an SRV. The observatory half of the event needs one.
  • Fit a data link scanner before you set off.
  • The Codex has a known bug where it only saves the first log, then shows the reward notification instead of the rest. Read your logs as you collect them, or check the inbox.
  • Go in daylight if you can. I landed on the dark side and the high beams only help so much.
  • Use the trip to top up engineering materials at the settlement.

You don’t need to do anything. It was issued to all commanders when the event went live with the weekly server refresh.

What do I need to bring?

A ship with an SRV hangar, an SRV and a data link scanner.

How many logs are there?

Ten in total: five on the Perpetual Toil megaship and five at Silver-Six Observatory.

What rewards do you get?

Free Halloween cosmetics, including Noctule Poltergeist paint jobs for the Anaconda and Asp Explorer, purple Shriek skins for Manticore weapons and a suit skin. Community reports put the total at nine items.

When does the Halloween event end?

Frontier hasn’t announced an end date. Community write-ups expect the rewards to stop after Halloween, so collect them soon.

What does the Perpetual Toil’s fifth log mean?

Nobody knows yet. It’s a string of dots and slashes that the community is still trying to decode.

Final Thoughts

Was it mind-blowing? No. It’s been okay. The Perpetual Toil looks superb, the story is properly creepy once the observatory logs land, and you get a handful of free Halloween cosmetics for an evening’s scanning. I’d have loved more though. Imagine if we’d had to board that ship, Operation style, and take the thing on. That’s the Elite Dangerous a lot of us want to see.

The bigger question is why Frontier has opened this door now. A permit-locked system, a creature that hates being mined, and a fifth log nobody can read. Maybe it’s just a good Halloween story. Maybe it’s setting something up.
