Guardian technology is essential for any Commander building a serious anti-Thargoid combat ship in Elite Dangerous. Guardian weapons, hull reinforcement packages, and module reinforcements all offer significant advantages over their human-engineered equivalents in AX combat — and unlocking them requires farming Guardian Blueprint Fragments at Guardian Structure sites. This guide covers where to find the most efficient farming locations, how to collect blueprints quickly, what dangers to expect, and how to unlock the AX modules you need in the shortest possible time.
Why Guardian Blueprints Matter for AX Combat
Guardian technology unlocks are gated behind Blueprint Fragments gathered at Guardian Structures — the ancient alien ruins found in systems outside human space. Unlike conventional modules that you simply purchase and engineer, Guardian tech requires you to physically visit these sites and interact with specific objects to collect the blueprint data. The Guardian Blueprint Fragments are then taken to a Technology Broker, where they can be converted into permanent unlocks for Guardian modules that you can then purchase and fit to your ships.
The Guardian modules worth prioritising for AX combat are the Guardian Gauss Cannon (the most effective AX weapon in the game at the right range), the Guardian Shard Cannon (excellent for close-range AX engagements), the Guardian Plasma Charger (useful for certain playstyles), the Guardian Hull Reinforcement Package (adds significant AX-relevant defensive HP), and the Guardian Module Reinforcement Package (protects core modules from Thargoid attacks). Unlocking all of these requires multiple Blueprint Fragment farming runs, but the investment dramatically increases your effectiveness against Interceptors.
Finding Guardian Structure Sites
Guardian Structure sites are not randomly distributed across the galaxy — they exist in specific systems that were catalogued over the course of Elite Dangerous’s Guardian storyline. The most efficient approach to farming Guardian Blueprints is to identify one of the established high-yield Guardian Structure sites and use it as your primary farming location rather than exploring to find new sites.
Community tools including EDDB, the Elite Dangerous wiki, and dedicated AX community resources like the AXI (Anti-Xeno Initiative) maintain up-to-date lists of the most accessible and efficient Guardian Structure locations for blueprint farming. These typically prioritise sites that are close to the human bubble (reducing transit time), have a high density of blueprint obtainable objects, and have well-documented routes through the site to maximise the number of blueprints collected per visit.
When selecting a Guardian Structure site for farming, pay attention to the type of structure. Guardian Structures come in different configurations — some have more monolith structures (which generate ancient key items needed to activate the site), while others have more blueprint-bearing objects. Understanding the layout of your chosen site before committing to a full farming session significantly reduces the time per blueprint fragment collected.
The Blueprint Farming Process Step by Step
The Guardian Blueprint farming process follows a consistent pattern at most sites. First, land your ship at the Guardian Structure. The landing zone is typically the open plateau near the structure itself — there is rarely a landing pad, so you will be surface landing. Deploy your SRV and begin the farming sequence.
The first step is activating the site. Most Guardian Structures require you to use the SRV’s data link scanner to activate Ancient Obelisks around the perimeter of the site. Successfully scanning obelisks generates an Ancient Key, which is then used to power up the central structure. The central structure, once activated, generates a Blueprint Fragment in a specific location — typically a glowing container or deposit near the power generator at the structure’s core.
Sentinel Guardian drones will activate when you disturb the site. These autonomous defence systems will engage your SRV and attempt to destroy it. SRV combat against Sentinels is manageable with practice — the key is to keep moving, use terrain for cover, and fire at the Sentinels when they lower their shields (which happens between attack cycles). You do not have to destroy all Sentinels to farm blueprints — just keep them suppressed long enough to collect what you came for.
After collecting the Blueprint Fragment, you can reset the site by flying back to your ship, briefly departing the area (a short distance is enough to reset the site’s active state), landing again, and repeating the process. Multiple reset cycles at the same site are the most efficient way to build up a large stock of Blueprint Fragments quickly, rather than travelling between multiple sites.
How Many Blueprints Do You Need?
Each Guardian technology unlock requires a set number of Blueprint Fragments, plus a number of additional Guardian components including Guardian Sentinel Wreckage Components, Guardian Power Conduits, Guardian Power Cells, and Guardian Technology Components. These secondary components are also gathered at Guardian Structure sites, so your farming runs should collect everything from each site activation rather than focusing exclusively on the Blueprint Fragments.
For a typical AX combat loadout targeting the Guardian Gauss Cannons and Guardian Hull Reinforcement Package, expect to spend three to five farming sessions at your chosen Guardian Structure site to accumulate the required components. Each session of ten to fifteen reset cycles at an efficient site should yield enough Fragments and associated components to make meaningful progress toward your unlock targets. Bring a ship with enough cargo capacity to hold the materials across multiple reset cycles without needing to return to a station mid-session.
Ship and Equipment Recommendations for Farming
The optimal ship for Guardian Blueprint farming is one with surface landing capability, good cargo space, and a comfortable jump range for reaching the chosen Guardian Structure site. An Asp Explorer, Krait Phantom, or Python with a surface scanner, SRV hangar, and sufficient cargo racks covers all requirements. You do not need AX weapons for the Sentinel drones — standard SRV weapons handle them adequately — so no special combat fit is required for the farming ship itself.
Bring a good number of SRV repair limpets or limpet controllers, as Sentinel combat will gradually damage your SRV across multiple farming cycles. Maintaining a functional SRV for the duration of a farming session is the key logistical challenge, and having repair capability prevents a damaged SRV from cutting your session short.
Once you have your Blueprint Fragments and Guardian components, return to a station with a Technology Broker — specifically a Human Technology Broker for Guardian tech unlocks. At the broker, exchange your components for the permanent unlock of your chosen Guardian modules. These unlocks are account-wide and permanent — once unlocked, you can purchase the module from the broker at any station that carries it without needing to farm again for that specific module type.
